This is magical from the very first lines when we feel Digory's PTSD, how he does not notice the days passing and how Uncle Andrew must be 180 or at least 95. Humor amidst sadness which becomes the motif throughout and established in the very first paragraphs.
Aunt Letty and not qualifying for virgin's blood and Mrs. Lefay in prison! Wonderful! And the sad but true compromise for them -- they wanted a life but weren't capable of wanting a life together more than they wanted everything else. Brilliant.
And Polly -- at the Hauge and some story involving the elephant and the police... Oh Polly, what HAVE you done.
I then adore their greeting -- the greater indecencies he might inflict upon her unladylike and deplorable reputation and she lives in Bedford! And has WEST AFRICAN FERTILITY STATUES!!! And 14 year old girls and Portuguese colonists and doctors and oh Polly!!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH. This is brilliant, brilliant backstory mystery writer.
Our introduction to the young ladies is hilarious, with Rosebud in the bonnet and sweater and the girls screaming in harmony. This is so very, very brilliant.
And then we move the heart of the story and its poignancy. Polly's message is so wonderful and so profound, that when they are meant to return to Narnia, they will and that in the meantime they cannot leave this world without defending it as they did to Narnia. I love them both and I would like very much to know if Polly in fact kept tigers....
And I found their final lines... ambiguous. They are not married and never shall be married, but yet they have given up everything for each other and...? When the reveal goes up, I would very much like to know, mystery writer, what you intended.
I love this. On of my favorites of this exchange and one of my favorite Polly and Digory stories.
