Susan was enjoying the chance to wander the Archennish city on her own schedule. The air was filled with excitement, ‘Like Christmas Eve,’ she thought, ‘though it’s only just December.’ She overheard a young girl say proudly to her friend that that night she would put “hay and carrots” in her shoes “for Father Christmas’s horse.” Susan puzzled over that. Hay in shoes? Horse? Besides, Father Christmas had reindeer. But the two children had moved on to talking happily of the chocolate and oranges they’d get, and some other thing –peppernotes?- that Susan didn’t recognize. Another Christmas treat, she supposed. |
