By Christmas, England is nothing but a half-remembered dream for the new Kings and Queens of Narnia. But some things don't fade, and Christmas traditions are remembered.

No one asks why there's a piano in Cair Paravel – if the Beavers can have a sewing machine, then why shouldn't there be a piano in the castle? And when Edmund suggests singing Christmas carols, "like Mother did," they all agree instantly.

So Peter sits at the piano to play (he wonders for a moment, how his fingers know what to do), and Susan and Lucy's voices mingle together, singing Silent Night.

A lonely light shines through the darkness, a single flickering candle’s humble offering of brightness and warmth against the winter’s chill. Its glow cuts through the quiet stillness of the wood, the valiant, unfailing flame burning as it has since the First Days. The iron sentinel waits alone as always, but this night is different. Hope, a weak and tiny flame itself after a century of ice, shines in the darkness as the faint singing of the long-silent Stars whispers down through the snow-heavy trees. The sentinel’s long watch is nearly complete; something wonderful is coming with the breaking dawn.

Susan was enjoying the chance to wander the Archennish city on her own schedule. The air was filled with excitement, ‘Like Christmas Eve,’ she thought, ‘though it’s only just December.’ She overheard a young girl say proudly to her friend that that night she would put “hay and carrots” in her shoes “for Father Christmas’s horse.” Susan puzzled over that. Hay in shoes? Horse? Besides, Father Christmas had reindeer. But the two children had moved on to talking happily of the chocolate and oranges they’d get, and some other thing –peppernotes?- that Susan didn’t recognize. Another Christmas treat, she supposed.

Lucy was happy that they were celebrating Christmas in Narnia, especially with the sockings they filled. Peter filled the toe in her stocking with what looked like a Satsuma. Might taste like one, too she thought.

“Missed one.” Susan gave Lucy a small present.

“Oops,” Lucy said as she quickly opened the small package. Opening the small box, she smiled as she saw a pendant of Aslan on a silver chain. Turning it over, she read “Always with you” before hugging it to herself. She let Susan help her put it on before hugging her sister tightly. “Best Christmas ever.”

There was no clock, but Edmund knew how long he had been working by the height of his candle. It was almost down to the socket, and yet his desk was still swamped with paper.

He lit a new candle off the old, and heard a chiding “Edmund...”

He sighed. “Lucy, the Archenland delegation will be here - “

“Tomorrow. And not until late.” Lucy plucked the pen from his hand. “Look at what you just wrote, Ed.”

He tried. His handwriting was past illegible.

Lucy shepherded him from the library, firm for all that she was called ‘the Gentle.’

“It’s socks,” Edmund said.

Peter covered a snort with a series of coughs. Susan hit Peter with her own gift and passed it to Lucy.

“Mittens!” Lucy cried. She stuffed the burgundy mitts over he hands and curled her fingers. “I love them, Susan. Thank you.”

Edmund tossed this brother a small package, which turned out to be—

“What in Cold Cal is this?”

“It’s an electric razor!”

“I won’t need to shave for five years, Edmund.”

But Peter grinned and passed Susan her gift; his finished manuscript for The Horse and his Boy.

The Squirrel’s news left him dumb with shock as he watched his friend scamper off. In disbelief, he scraped a fistful of snow off of the nearest branch and splayed out his fingers. It did not sift through his fingers as expected. Instead, it lay clumped tight in his palm.

“We best get on our way, boys, before it’s too late,” he said to the shaggy reindeer. “There are children to see and gifts to deliver!” With a hearty laugh, Father Christmas mounted his sleigh. It had been 100 years too long, and he wasn’t about to waste another moment.

Caspian, fearing his new bride would be homesick, gave her the best of Christmases: feasting in Trufflehunter's sett; gift-giving in Trumpkin's hall; and decorating a plump fir in Cair Paravel's gardens (to its dryad's delight).

Then, at midnight on Christmas Eve, Lilliandil woke him. "My relatives have arrived." And she opened the window. "Merry Christmas, beloved."

Silvery light poured in, and with it a song of crystalline purity. For a moment, Caspian was confused. Then he gazed up at the heavens and understood.

Wrapping his arm about her, he watched as the stars danced and the sky caroled with joy.

Peter surveyed the Leopard. The stars shone hard as diamonds: another bitter night. Behind him, the silent patrol made camp. He stared blankly into darkness.

They’d be decorating the tree at the Cair now – laughing, singing, hanging this year’s – the fifteenth! – exquisite bauble. Red Dwarf work: golden, delicate, warm jewels glowing…

He shrugged, focussing on reality: poor, hard ground, scrubby pine-forest – before him, one tiny, scrawny tree…

Unexpectedly, the High King laughed – and dropped, manoeuvring… just…so!

…and smiled to see it: a Christmas Tree for border-guards, its thin, gallant branches ablaze with the stars of the Leopard, bright as diamonds.

Susan sighed happily as she stood out in the snow, letting the snowflakes coat her hair and lashes. There had been a time when she had wanted nothing more than to defeat a Snow Queen and get rid of winter. But, time had passed and she had missed Christmas and all that it had meant.

Susan gasped when she felt a cold, wet ball of snow hit her in the face.

Lucy giggled. “You can’t catch me if you tried.”

Susan shook off the snow and ran after her sister. “You asked for it.”

It was good to be home.

“Gifts are supposed to make one jolly, Edmund,” Lucy admonishes gently when Susan shepherds in his surprise – a fox, two satyrs and a squirrel family he recalls well, carved stark in his mind. The old fox proposes a toast, and the prickle of claws run like memory down Edmund's back as two young squirrels use him for climbing practice, unafraid of him now, making everything so different from that morning a year past in melting snow that he can think of only one thing to say, forcing words past the lump in his throat.

Making a list, checking it twice! Twice and thrice and many times again. There were so many visits to keep track of! He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice! Catchy tune, Father Christmas thought to himself. Foolish humans, though. As though he set himself up to arbitrate every soul's behaviour. Why, if he had to watch everyone for signs of wrong-doing, he'd have no time to make gifts! nor anyone to gift, for that matter. No, no, wishes were the thing. Wishes and need and good hearty cheer. His task, as it always was, is to bring joy.

Narnia Christmas Card Exchange

Hello everyone! It's time to sign up for the Second Annual Narnia Christmas Card Exchange! For those of you who weren't around last year, this exchange is similar to the Narnia Fic Exchange, but with a couple of major differences.

1) The "Christmas cards" are drabbles! This means that you will write a mini-fic of exactly 100 words. This is a very different challenge to writing full-length fic. Part of the fun is trying to choose your wording precisely so that your final product is 100 words, not 99 or 101! Remember, the idea is that your drabble could fit inside a Christmas card.

2) For this exchange, the author’s name will appear on the "card" when it is first posted, rather than waiting until the end for a reveal. The reason is that it is going to run over a much shorter time period than the NFE, and the entries will be much shorter.

As with the NFE, participants will sign up stating what areas of the fandom and genres of fic they are most comfortable with writing, as well as a brief description of what they would like to receive. The mods will then pair everyone up, and send out the prompts to each author. Then you all go off and write a 100 word drabble based on the request. The best part is that the low word count means those of you writing Big Bang fics can still participate -- it might even be a welcome distraction! The signup post is here.

Hello folks!

Well, there was interest in a Big Bang, so

unsuitenedt and I will be running one again this year!

As last year, the challenge will be hosted here on

narniaexchange, and again, it will not be an anonymous exchange - instead, you are committing to writing a longer story and completing it in the timeframe given. Because we know not everyone is comfortable with a 20,000 word story, we are again offering the option of a Mini Bang, with a minimum of 10,000 words.

We will try again to have an art component this year, but we don't have a lot of people interested in signing up for it. So please, if you're not interested in writing, but would still like to participate, we'd love to have you sign up to create an artwork for the stories. And if you're a writer, but would also like to create some art, feel free to sign up to do both. And make sure to link this to all your friends - the more participants, the better!

Prompts posting will begin this Sunday so start thinking! There is no limit to the amount of prompts you can post - the more variety, the better! Signups will begin November 4 and submissions are due April 14. That gives both artists and writers extra time.
