snacky: (narnia last battle)
[personal profile] snacky
It's open, right here!

This story is a gift for [livejournal.com profile] tonzura123, who didn't have an AO3 account.

In a week, I'll reveal the writers, but other than that, that's it for the NFE this year, friends. See you next spring!
[identity profile] nfe-gremlin.livejournal.com
And that's the end of the NFE for 2013, folks! Congratulations to everyone who participated! The stories just keep getting better every year! Under the cut you'll find the reveals/master list.

Feel free to post your fic wherever you'd like!

Master List... )

**********

I want to thank everyone who participated! I have such a great time with the exchange every year, and it's thanks to all of you.

Extra special thanks to the pinch-hitters: [livejournal.com profile] tonzura123, [livejournal.com profile] wingedflight21, [livejournal.com profile] rthstewart, and [livejournal.com profile] be_themoon! You ladies are the best! ETA: And of course, [livejournal.com profile] tiabolt! I AM SORRY, TIABOLT! EXTRA EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS TO YOU!

Don't forget our ongoing Madness Round! You can find the prompts here, now with all the names attached. Remember, you are posting your stories to the AO3 Collection and if you don't have an account at the AO3, just let me know, and I will give you a code.

I strongly suggest making your account now, since the entire NFE will be run on AO3 next year. Also, if people want to write an additional story for your prompt, they'll need a user name to gift it to! :)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] snacky

Comfort Me With Apples… )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want:
My favorite characters are the Pevensies, Caspian, Eustace Scrubb, Jill Pole, Professor Kirke, and Aslan. I'd like a fic set either during the Golden Age, the time in between trips to Narnia, or during the time right before the Pevensies died and went to Narnia in the last battle. I'm okay with incest, but it does not have to be included. (Any combination works for me.) A fic from Susan, Jill, Edmund or Eustace third person PoV would be great. I also like Caspian/Peter and Caspian/Susan. I'd love a focus on a family dynamic, whether blood or Narnian family. I'm ok with angst, but only if the ending is at least implied to be happy or bittersweet. Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons to read fics about. I love music and love reading about characters playing a musical instrument. Explicit sex is fine, but I don't want a PWP.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
1) "I can already tell you think I'm the dragon, that would be so like me, but I'm not. I'm not the dragon. I'm not the princess either." - Richard Siken

2) "And if you look at your reflection, is it all you want to be?" - Nine Inch Nails

Narnia Fic Exchange 2013 Update:

Hey folks! We'll be done with the NFE 2013 tonight, when the last story is posted. Tomorrow I will post the masterlist of all the stories, with the authors' names attached.

It's been a great round this year and the stories have been fabulous! Please remember to leave feedback for the author of your story. I know everyone worked hard on their fics and will appreciate your thanks!

***********

NFE Madness Update:

I was also going to open the community to Madness posting tomorrow, but due to a combination of factors, I am going to hold off on that for one more week, and Madness won't open until October 9th. So that means you get an extra week to work on your Madness stories! \o/ (and I get some time to attach the requesters' names to prompts!)

Also, there is another change to Madness and this is a big one: we will not be posting the stories here at the comm on LJ. Instead, you will be posting them to the Madness Collection on Ao3.

The major reason for this change:

It's in anticipation of moving the Narnia Fic Exchange to AO3 next year entirely. This will give people unfamiliar with the archive some practice in posting to it.

So that changes the rules a bit, as seen in this post here. The new rules are found on the Profile Page of the Collection on AO3 (as linked above) and behind this cut... )

If you don't have an account at AO3, you will need a code to create one. I have codes for people, so please either comment here, or send me an email, and I will send one to you. Remember, you will need an account to participate next year, so might as well create one now! :)

If you haven't posted to AO3 before, here is a tutorial that will help you post to a collection, like NFE Madness.

The one problem you might run into in posting is that you may have written a gift story for a person who doesn't have an AO3 account. I'm not sure how that will work in posting, but if it's a problem, you can gift Nfe_gremlin with the story, and use the Notes field to indicate the person the story really is for.

Hopefully that coves everything, but I might have left something out. If you have any questions, please comment here or email me at narniaficexchange@gmail.com!

ETA: If you sign up for an AO3 account, or already have one, reply to this comment with your AO3 username, so if someone writes you a story, they'll know who to gift it to.

Original Prompt that we sent you: What I want: Anything with any (or all!) of the following: Cor/Aravis of any kind. A story set in Calormene and Politics during the Golden Age. Reconciliation of the religions of Tash and Aslan as having the same origin. Spy!Edmund. Character studies of any of the Pevensies. Rillian and/or Edmund recovering from Jadis/The Lady of the Green Kirtle.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: War, Politics, parallels between WWII and wars in Narnia, culture shock, trauma. "There's a beast in every man, and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand"/"Like most misery, it started with apparent happiness."/"I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both. (Death)"/"I have to say that although it broke my heart, I was, and still am, glad I was there."

Summary: Star showers have always boded well for Narnia’s future. An AU of the Last Battle.
Author’s Note: Thank you so much to my betas, [redacted] and [redacted]!

A Song for the Stars )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I'd love anything with Eustace and Jill (either romantic or non-romantic). Eustace and his mother after VDT or SC, Eustace and his father after VDT or SC. Another lovely thing would be a short AU (or long if you're up to it!) set in Narnia where the last battle doesn't end the world. Also, in my own head-canon Susan takes up playing the violin in our world. It would be awesome to see something centering around or including that. Have fun and pick whatever jumps out at you :D

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: If it's a Eustace and Jill fic, it would be fun if they learned sign language together.

Title: Light To The Misled and Lonely Traveler
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rthstewart
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] wingedflight21
Rating: K+/PG
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Crackfic! Cross-over madness. No warnings; minor plot and character spoilers for the following: Voyage of the Dawn Treader ; Artemis Fowl series; Thursday Next series; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; BBC’s Merlin Series 3-4; Series 4, Doctor Who (10th Doctor and Donna Noble); Warehouse 13 (minor plot hints from The Big Snag and The Sky’s The Limit); The Hobbit (film 2012; character spoilers); The Lord of the Rings (book). (Also there are nods to Struthious’ Oi, None of Your, a Donna Noble AU and another favorite Narnia fic).

Title is taken from John Milton, “The stars, that nature hung in heaven, and filled their lamps with everlasting oil, give due light to the misled and lonely traveler.”

Summary: From The Time and Space Traveler’s Guide, Entry for Coriakin’s Island, V 2.0:
Should your journey to or from Aslan’s Country (excellent food and top notch accommodation – see entry for Aslan’s Country above) or the Sweet Sea (delicious but be sure to brush your teeth after partaking to prevent decay!) take you through the Eastern Sea, you will find there are few places in the archipelagos worth the bother of leaving the time stream. No establishments offer notable refreshment, sights, or entertainment. Some of the Islands are very dangerous whilst offering no commensurate excitement and are best avoided entirely. (See entries for Dark Island, Lone Islands, Deathwater below). As for Coriakin’s Island, do not be lulled by the prospect of the pleasant greenery, homely house, and fine, sandy and pristine beaches. The magician who lives there is a cantankerous coot with a habit of giving uninvited guests extra appendages or turning them into a squid. AVOID.

Light To The Misled and Lonely Traveler… )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

Just going to throw out some ideas (but I'm pretty easy-going so pretty much anything will make me happy):

Just what does Coriakin get up to on his island when he isn't entertaining travelling visitors? Is he a magician because stars have magic or are the two unrelated? Does he know Ramandu and his daughter (and do they ever get together for tea)?

Susan and Eustace are both very concerned with logic and common sense - does this mean they got along fairly well even before their Narnian adventures? Or were they always at odds? Would this change after their respective adventures?

How often did the Friends of Narnia have dinner parties? Was it always just those we saw in LB attending? Did Susan ever come? Did they ever invite anyone else?

I love AUs, especially dark ones. What if the the Dawn Treader crew got shipwrecked? Could Tirian have had ulterior motives in LB? How would the Pevensie parents have reacted if their kids returned as adults -- or if they didn't return at all?

I also adore crossovers so, while I know this one's a long stretch, it would be super cool to see a crossover with either the Swallows and Amazons series or the Thursday Next series (specifically Friday and Edmund's interactions).

save the last dance )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: Susan and Edmund are my favorites, so I'd love a fic centered on them! Something about their adventures in Tashbaan or their escape from the city, maybe. Or another Golden Age adventure of some kind. England fic is good too though, I'm not terribly picky. I love to see a lot of banter between them, or something that focuses on their similarities. (If you're familiar with rthstewart's TSG-verse, a fic with Susan, Edmund and Tebbitt would make my year, especially one where Ed is just casually protective enough to scare the pants off Tebbitt and Susan is annoyed by their bickering.)

If Ed and Sue aren't your favorites, I also love Cor/Aravis, again for the bantering possibilities! They're a lot of fun and I'd love anything that extends their story further.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:

I walked into your dream/and now I've forgotten how to dream my own dream/you are the clever one, aren't you? -Mother, Tori Amos

Title: Once Upon a Diplomatic Mission
Author: [livejournal.com profile] tiabolt
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] ruanchunxian0
Rating: T
Content/Warnings: Nothing more dangerous than a bit of light flirting.

Once Upon a Diplomatic Mission… )

Prompt: What I want: Not too much angst; some humour, snark; happy ending; Pevensies, Narnia; minimal romance
Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
(Feel free to pick and choose)
- I've been looking for a good crossover with Once Upon a Time and haven't managed to find any, so would love to see some. Prompts: 1) Peter and/or Edmund, and Prince Charming, on kingship/ruling/being commoner-turned-royal; 2) Lucy and Red Riding Hood, running with wolves; 3) Snow White and Susan, archery ; 4) any character from both universes, curses, destiny, waiting for a saviour/being saviour; 5) or just run with the crossover and do whatever you want
- Even if you don't want to write a crossover, feel free to use any part of those prompts for just Narnia instead
- "Edmund was engaged in long overdue shuttling diplomacy…to assure all that […] Narnia had no intention of turning other heads of state into barnyard animals" – rthstewart, Lost in Translation. I would love to see a fic elaborating the diplomatic issues that would arise after the incident of Rabadash the Ass.
- Golden Age/AU where they don't leave: Pevensies being badass and awesome monarchs
- Pevensies from outsider point of view
- World-building in Narnia and/or the world beyond

Title: Into Something Rich and Strange
Author: [livejournal.com profile] edenfalling / Elizabeth Culmer
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] snacky
Rating: G
Content/Warnings: Nothing major, but this might not be the best story to read if you are claustrophobic or particularly afraid of either drowning or the dark.
Summary: "The siren is a creature of reflections, born of lightning on the winter sea," the mer-woman said, her tail fins twitching in signs Susan had no skill to read. "Cold and light feed its power and no being born of the sea can gainsay its command, though we who are female can at the least resist its lure. You are a Daughter of Eve, born of dreams and flesh. Your power comes from the warmth of blood and the darkness of the beating heart; the siren has no strength against that magic. You must close your eyes and dream the enemy into the final dark."
Author's Notes: I tried to combine a story about Susan fixing things and an ocean story about the merpeople; hopefully I have succeeded. My heartfelt thanks to [redacted] for her awesome beta-reading, without which the story would be much shallower.

Into Something Rich and Strange… )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want:
Any of these, take your pick or mix and match:
• stories about Caspian during his reign - fighting the giants, rebuilding Cair Paravel, settling in Narnia with Ramandu's Daughter, anything!
• stories about Susan during the Golden Age - what lead her to Calormene in HHB? She never rode to wars, so what was her role during them? Her role in the politics of Narnia maybe? A story where everything has gone wrong, and it must be fixed, and she is the one to do it.
• ocean travel stories - they don't have to be on the Dawn Treader! Maybe a story about the merpeople!
• Travel stories of all kinds - I love seeing characters (the Pevensies during their reign) exploring outside of Narnia, or maybe finding their way between worlds?
• For shipping, I love Caspian/Peter, and I like Peter/Susan, but if that's not your thing, no worries.
• I also love post-Narnia stories about Susan - what direction did her life take her after the events of the The Last Battle? But nothing tragic, I don't want her wishing she'd died.
• I like AUs of all kinds! And I like certain crossovers - LOTR or Game of Thrones; or if you're writing an England story, maybe a crossover with the books "The Montmaray Journals" or "Code Name Verity", if you're familiar with those fandoms. But please no crossovers with Doctor Who or Sherlock or Supernatural.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: Banter, laughter, fun, horses, found family, and deep connections.

Susan and Lucy were queens, and they ruled well and proudly
They honored their land and their lord, rang the bells long and loudly
-- Wicked Girls, Seanan McGuire

As someone long prepared for the occasion;
In full command of every plan you wrecked –

What You Might Have Been… )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I think I'd like Golden Age fic, as I'm currently revelling in HHB, the only book where the Pevensies are really adult monarchs. I'm game for any kind of fic inspired by that book, whether character-based, or plot-based.

I love, love, love world-building type fics, whether you choose to explore this with something immersed in Calormen and the Tisroc's court, or with some sort of flashback comparing the nature of monarchy and empire and foreign relations in England and Narnia. I'm also fascinated by the Aravis/Cor relationship (cross-cultural romances are always frustratingly fantastic!), the brotherly interactions between Cor and Corin, delving into Susan's state of mind...anything at all, really, that's in some random way inspired by HHB.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:

Go ahead and use these to inspire you in any way possible. Even if there's only a squint-and-you-can-see-it reference to any one of these prompt quotes, I'll be perfectly happy.

"I used to think that the interesting issue was whether we should have a monarchy or not. But now I think that question is rather like, should we have pandas or not? Our current royal family doesn't have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment. But aren't they interesting? Aren't they nice to look at? Some people find them endearing; some pity them for their precarious situation; everybody stares at them, and however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it's still a cage...Is monarchy a suitable institution for a grown-up nation? I don't know." -- Royal Bodies, by Hilary Mantel

"It is never too late to be what you might have been." -- George Eliot

"Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." -- Rainer Maria Rilke

Once the game is over, the King and the pawn go back in the same box. -- Italian proverb
