Summary: Lucy has an adventure

Lucy opened her eyes, and for a moment, forgot where she was. She was in a huge bed, surrounded by a golden canopy. Thick white pillows were spread over the bed and a thick white quilt was twisted around her ankles. That was when she realised she was still wearing her dress from last night.

Narnia, she thought excitedly! Every moment here felt like a dream, one that she hoped never to wake from. Surely it had been only a few short months since they had been crowned Kings and Queens. Time was so different here, she was never truly sure when it was. Susan always knew. She was the logical one of the four. Well, her and Edmund. They spent their time pouring over books, lost in the myths and mysteries of Narnia.

Peter was more like herself. He would run with her through corridors, busy exploring and wondering what adventure would come next. Of course, he could be awfully serious when he needed to be, when he was required to be High King. But mostly he was fun. They would often take Mr Tumnus exploring with them, and he would show them secret passages and hidden places throughout Cair Paravel. It was magical.

Pushing back the quilt, Lucy jumped to the floor and raced to the cupboard, searching for a different dress to wear today. Today Mr Tumnus had promised to show them a new passage, one that had not been used in a long time. He thought that they would find it interesting, and had invited Susan and Edmund along also – if they could be torn from their books.

Dressed, Lucy quickly opened her door and almost ran straight into Mrs Beaver, who was entering with the breakfast tray.

“My, my, Queen!” Mrs Beaver exclaimed. “What is the rush today? I expected to find you still abed!”

Lucy giggled and shook her head. “Mr Tumnus is taking us exploring! Will you come with us?”

Mrs Beaver sighed. “I can’t today, I’m sorry dear. Here, enjoy your breakfast and I’ll send Mr Tumnus along.”

Lucy sat down at her little table and picked at her toast. How could she be hungry on a day like this? It just wasn’t possible. Besides, Mr Tumnus would be here soon and then she would be too busy to eat. Standing, she rushed over to the windowsill. It was a beautiful day. The kind of day for fun.

A knock at the door sounded and Mr Tumnus entered. Lucy ran to him to give him a hug, only stopping when he bowed to her. She frowned at the formality, but Mr Tumnus just winked. It was then Lucy noticed that Susan, Peter and Edmund were all following him through the doorway. She frowned again as she noticed the serious look on Peter’s face. Today was starting to look a lot less fun.

“Lu,” Peter began. “I’m sorry, but our fun today is going to have to be put off. There are some visitors from Telmar that Susan and I need to meet. You and Ed can explore if you like, or join us, but we’ll need Mr Tumnus there as well. So we will have to find this tunnel tomorrow.”

Lucy sighed and nodded her head. “It’s okay, I’ll stay here, I don’t mind.”

“I’ll go with Peter and Susan,” Edmund smiled at her. “If you don’t mind Lu?”

“Don’t mind at all,” Lucy smiled back.

As quick as they had come, her brothers and sister left, heading for the throne room, or maybe one of the many meeting parlours. Mr Tumnus followed them out with a sad smile and a wave. Lucy crossed her arms and sat on the bed grumpily. What was the fun of being a Queen if you couldn’t even do what you wanted to, especially on a beautiful day like this? She stared around at the walls. It was pretty in here, but she wanted to be running around and having fun.

She could always explore by herself, she thought. Grinning, she raced to put shoes on. Carefully, she opened the door, checking both ways for anyone that she might know. No one was to be found. Lucy ran down the corridor, heading towards the south end of the palace. This was the only part of the palace that hadn’t been fully explored and Lucy knew that the hidden passage had to be there.

Down three flights of stairs she ran, passing only a handful of people on the way. They were too surprised to so anything but bow to her as she went past. She reached the south wing and paused. Which way would the passage be? There were lights to the right of her, so she guessed that those areas were inhabited. But to her left, there was a passage barely visible in the gloom. This had to be the one, she though. Grabbing a lantern off the wall, she went to the left.

The passage was beautifully painted. There were paintings of different animals, and of an apple tree. There was one painting that looked so much like the White Witch that Lucy shivered. It was cold here. Doors were on either side of the passage, but Lucy hadn’t been game to try one as yet. Besides, she could see silver light ahead which could only mean one thing – the end of the passage was open to the elements.

The lantern flickered as she got closer to the silvery light and a gust of wind blew through the passage. Next minute there was a noise ahead and the silver light disappeared as something slammed closed. Lucy screamed in fright and turned to race up the passage and back to the stairs when she tripped and the lantern smashed. Tears threatened to fall now but Lucy pushed herself up and worked her way over to the passage wall.

I won’t cry, she thought to herself. I won’t. It’s just a passage, there’s nothing here. All I have to do is follow the wall and I’ll be out. Keep following the wall Lucy. Inch by inch she managed to make herself move through the darkness. The wall was bumpy and she could make out some of the paintings. Some of them felt real to the touch and it frightened her more than the dark.

She could hear people yelling out and lights swinging ahead and she gave up on holding the wall and raced towards them.

“Lucy?” Peter was yelling. “Lucy where are you?”

“Lucy?” all three of her siblings shouted.

“I’m here!” Lucy shouted back. “I’m here, I’m alright.”

She raced towards them and rushed into Peter’s arms, quickly surrounded by Susan’s and Edmund’s as well.

“Lucy, why did you go off alone?” Peter demanded. “You’ve been gone for hours, we couldn’t find you and then one of the fauns remembered seeing you heading down the South stairs!”

“I’m sorry Peter, I just wanted to explore!” Lucy cried.

Peter sighed and squeezed her tight.

“Look at your dress,” Susan laughed. “No one would recognise you as a Queen in that. Time to go get cleaned up I think.”

Lucy nodded and followed her siblings up the stairs. No more adventures for her, she thought. At least, not without the others at her side.

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want:
- Pevensies; Eustace and Jill are okay too
- Preferably in Narnia, but I'm fine with other worlds/universes. I'm a fan of AUs as well (e.g. Pevensies stay in Narnia; Susan not forgetting in TLB; etc).
- Bookverse if using canon.
- Optional -- battles, adventure, mystery, mythology, spies

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: None

What I definitely don't want in my fic: Incest, rape, slash, romance; Spare Oom Pevensie angst about being exiled from Narnia.

Thank you, Mystery Author, for the lovely story!

Poor Lucy. All she wanted to do was have an adventure and well, she certainly did but not the type she was looking for! Like her, I would have loved to explore hidden tunnels and passages inside the castle, by myself even if the others couldn't come. One can see she's beginning to show some valiance as well, as she tells herself not to cry even though she's scared. And thankfully, it all worked out in the end.

No more adventures for her, she thought. At least, not without the others at her side. — and that's definitely the lesson learned for the day for the little Queen, not to mention it's a lot more fun when she has friends and family to join her. :-)

That passage sounds wonderful -- I love the description of the paintings being real to the touch as well as to the eye. Lucy's excitement at exploring and her disappointment at not being able to do so with her siblings and Mr. Tumnus come through very clearly.

Aww, poor Lucy. I like the look into wee Lucy here; I think sometimes I forget how young she was at first! But I sympathize with her--I would want to explore those passages!

Such a cute story! Poor Lucy, adventures don't always go so well, but they do make lovely stories afterwards!
