It was barely three o’clock, but the London sky was already darkening into evening. Snow was just beginning to cover the walkway in front of the house when Peter returned from the shop.


“They were out of cigarettes.” He shed his coat.


Edmund wasn’t surprised. “Too bad! It’s cold and I’m down to my last one,” he replied. It made Peter grin.


“Try drinking tea,” Peter said in a teasing tone, poking the coals in the stove.


The corner of Edmund’s mouth twitched in a smirk. “Are you offering me your share?”


Peter shrugged, straightening. “I’ll just drink sloe gin.”
